Abstract

In this paper we discuss the problems of fusing Logo language and Logo educational system with the Web technology. We describe experience gained through the presentation of a number of summer Logo computer schools on the Web-sites. We also present our approach for converting data to html-elements through ucb-logo pipes.

Keywords:

Introduction

For a number of years our group based in the Program Systems Institute and the University of Pereslavl have been investigating different learning environments. Since 1986 our work was strongly influenced by the Papert idea of discovery and constructive learning. We have designed and tested different Logo microworld as during the summer computer schools (1) as during distant educational projects (2), and apply logo approach to different domains of knowledge.

The rapid development of Internet technology has lead a new challenging situation, when all educational tools and microworlds are checked for the Web-connectivity. Only a system which can be presented on the WWW or/and support on the WWW has a chance to be alive after last Internet-revolution. Web-revolution has mixed and linked different branches of scientific knowledge and cultural vales. This web-trends is very similar to Logo-trends. Thus it is very naturally to try Logo as element in the hypermedia projects. Therefore, we try to fuse Logo microworld to the World Wide WEB and test possibility for the Logo-Turtle to survive in the Internet environment.

Russian Logo and Lego-Logo schools and groups on the Web

We regard the possibility to organize telecommunications in Logo and LogoExpress environment as most interesting and promising, since it allows to exchange texts, procedures, shapes, pictures and whole pages. On the base of these wishes we have organized special computer session for learning groups from the different cities of Russia - Moscow, St. Petersburg, Omsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Pereslavl-Zalessky. During this session we have use different dialect of Logo and use Logo for learning very different knowledges. The results of these session and special information about different Russian Logo groups are available on the Web - http://uchcom.botik.ru/educ/uchcom/history/1993/

More recently we have try to apply web-mirrow for summer computer schools which were organized near Pereslavl-Zalessky and in the other regions of Russia (Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg). This mirrow help our students and tutors to understand each other much better and to produce more powerful educational projects. Every summer we have organized very similar projects with the mixed media of following components:

During these projects every particapant has done the following:

Picture 1. Video film about Lego gear in nature

Hypermedial reports about Lego-Logo schools are avilable on two web-sites:
http://uchcom.botik.ru/educ/uchcom/history/
http://dll.botik.ru/educ/PUSTYN/lego/

There are texts, listing of Logo programs, images of Lego gears and short examples of video records.

Logo pipes as a component of CGI programs

For a number of years we have designed and tested different versions of Personal construct microworld in Logo media (3, 4). Within the framework of the Personal construct microworld students can create a computer map of their inner worlds and then improve this map. While using microworld procedures one can choose the personality of a student as a subject for the study. The system of constructs, received through microworld commands, reveals the system of notions used by the person in everyday life without explicit representation. Most significally, in a difference to general psychological tests, student can use microworld commands to add new constructs, to delete unimportant or surplus constructs, and therefore make better self-knowledge presentation.

Last version of the microworld was adapted to the WWW: http://repweb.botik.ru

We have used UCB-logo pipes to convert data to lists and to html-elements. One can see methaphor "list is a table" and lists of clasters directry as html-tables (Pic. 2).
